Monmouth-Roseville stood toe-to-toe against the state’s seventh-ranked Class 1A soccer team September 28 but ultimately fell 3-2 to Mendota at Pattee Fields.
The Titans took a 1-0 first-half lead in the ninth minute when Cee Sarcomo sent Bruntsh Bolese behind the Trojans’ defense. Bolese’s shot was saved by Mendota goalie Mateo Goy, but he tracked down the rebound and got the ball back to Sarcomo, who scored to the far post.
The visitors netted the equalizer five minutes later on a first-touch finish in the box by Sebastian Carlos off an assist from the wing from Isaac Diaz. Mendota grabbed its first lead of the game with 6:48 left in the first half when Diaz scored on a free kick from the top of the box. M-R goalie Isaac Garcia got a fingertip on the shot, but it deflected in off the post.
Five minutes into the second half, the Titans pulled even on a good sequence, drawing a foul at the top of the box. On the resulting free kick, M-R played Sarcomo free in the middle of the box, and he was brought down for a penalty. For the third time this season, Garcia came up from his goalie position to make the PK, tying the score at 2-2.
Mendota, however, put in the last goal of the game just two minutes later, as Diaz scored on a first-touch finish from Carlos.
Mendota, which had won its past five games by a combined score of 40-2, improved to 15-1-1 on the season, while M-R is now 7-6-4.
