There was a frantic finish to September 19’s boys soccer match between visiting Metamora and Monmouth-Roseville at Pattee Fields, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
With the score even at 1-1, the Redbirds pushed ahead with under four minutes to play. In a crowded penalty box, Ty Lucas made a good move to his right and beat M-R goalie with a shot inside the far post.
Metamora’s lead was short-lived, as the Titans were awarded a penalty kick after a scramble in the box. Garcia came all the way up from his goalie position to score the equalizing PK with 2:19 remaining.
With the seconds winding down, the Redbirds created a chance, with Garcia saving a shot from the end line into the post. It stayed in play, and the Redbirds nearly scored again before the Titans cleared the ball and the final whistle sounded.
Off a corner kick, M-R freshman Francisco Tomas Francisco scored his first varsity goal with a blast from the edge of the penalty box, putting the Titans up 1-0 with 24:50 left in the game. Four minutes later, Metamora’s Jacob Crotz put a long-range free kick over Garcia and just under the crossbar to tie the score.
The teams were evenly matched in shots and saves, too, with M-R holding a slim 14-13 edge in shots. Garcia made an outstanding save during the scoreless first half, one of his seven saves in the game, and Crotz hit the post. Graham Monckton also had seven saves for the Redbirds, including a PK that came right before Francisco’s goal.
