Quincy Notre Dame used a second-half surge of three goals in six minutes to capture the Monmouth Regional championship, defeating the Monmouth-Roseville Titans 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Pattee Fields.
QND standout Leo Cann had the bookend goals of the run, which ended with the Raiders holding a 5-1 lead. The middle goal was scored by Elliott Hendrian.
For nearly one half, M-R held its own against the defending state champion Raiders. In one sequence, two M-R shots had to be saved off the line by QND defenders. The Raiders finally broke through with 3:28 left in the half, with Sullivan Walker scoring on a rebound.
QND doubled its lead in the third minute of the second half, going on a counterattack straight up the middle of the field. Rylan Fischer had the finishing touch, assisted by Walker.
During QND’s surge later in the half, M-R did get a goal back after a rare handball in the box call on Raider goalie Max Frericks, who was given a red card. Bawi Thang netted the PK for the Titans, and Beto Jurado scored the final goal of the game on a far post shot against QND’s backup ’keeper, Carter Hankins.
M-R closed the season with a record of 17-5-1.
