The Monmouth College women's basketball team returned home and put three players in double digits but lost to Lawrence 71-57 on Jan. 25. The Fighting Scots (4-14, 1-8) will play the next two games on the road before playing four of the final five games at home
Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) scored Monmouth's first two baskets with the Vikings answering both times. Lawrence scored the next eight points before Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) scored in the paint. Down 14-6, Monmouth closed the quarter on an 8-0 run with buckets from Madi Finch (Aledo, Illinois), Goodrich and the final four points from Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois),
Stearns made a free throw for Monmouth's first point of the second quarter and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) beat the shot clock to pull the Scots back within one. Jones scored again but Lawrence went on a 17-2 run over the final 7:08 of the half to lead 31-27.
Goodrich scored early in the third quarter and Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer to cut the Vikings lead to 40-26. Rangel hit another 3-pointer and Goodrich scored in the lane but Lawrence answered with a 3-pointer. Jones made a bucket during a 17-2 Lawrence run as the Vikings took a 26-point lead. Sellers scored the final points of the quarter with Lawrence leading 60-36.
Jones started the fourth quarter with a 3-point play and Stearns added a bucket. Jones and Goodrich scored in the lane before Stearns hit a 3-pointer to cut the Lawrence lead to 19. Goodrich scored the next four Monmouth points and Stearns hit a 3-pointer with Lawrence up 16. Stearns made two free throws for the final points as Lawrence won 71-57,Goodrich led the Scots with 16 points while Stearns added 15 and Jones had 11. Finch had five rebounds while Stearns led the Scots with five steals and three assists. Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) led the team with two blocks,
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Jones has scored in double figures 14 times this season ... Stearns has scored in double figures eight times including five of the last six games ...
