Jones, Stearns Lead Scots to Win at Lake Forest

The Monmouth College women's basketball team got back in the win column with a 59-48 conference win at Lake Forest on Jan. 28. The Fighting Scots (5-14, 2-8) won all four quarters to even the season series against the Foresters.

Lake Forest scored first before Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) made a layup. Down 7-2, Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) and Jones scored on consecutive possessions. Scheidenhelm scored again and Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer to cut the LFC lead to one. Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois),hit a 3-pointer for a 14-13 lead and Rangel buried another one to put the Scots up 17-15 after the first quarter.The hosts tied the game early in the seconds before Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer and Scheidenhelm scored in the paint. Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) gave Monmouth a 7-point lead before LFC scored four straight. Five free throws, three by Goodrich, put Monmouth up 31-25 at halftime.

The lead was trimmed to two before Stearns made a pair of free throws to kickstart the third quarter. Jones scored and Stearns hit a 3-pointer for a 7-0 run and a 38-29 lead. Stearns kept the run going with two straight buckets before LFC scored their first points in over seven minutes.

Leading 42-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, Monmouth pushed the lead back to 10 on a bucket by Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois). Jones connected on a 3-point play before the teams traded baskets. Jones made a 3-pointer for a 52-39 lead. The hosts cut the Monmouth lead to nine with 2:00 to play before Jones scored on two straight possessions. Scheidenhelm gave the ot 57-46 lead with 55 seconds left and Jones scored the final points with 22 seconds to play.

Jones led the Scots with 17 points while Stearns had 16. Jones also had 11 rebounds and three blocks to lead the team while Stearns added eight boards. Goodrich led Monmouth with four assists and four steals.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Jones has scored in double figures 15 times this season ... Stearns has scored in double figures nine times including six of the last seven games ... Jones posted her second double-double of the season ... She moved into a tie for ninth with Paige Nord on the career blocks list with 45 ... Jones is tied for 12th on the single-season list with 24 blocks ... Monmouth snapped a 17-game road losing streak ... Lake Forest leads the all-time series 44-18 ... Monmouth stopped a five-game losing streak to the Foresters, including a 75-64 loss in Monmouth on Dec. 3 .... Rangel (11) and Hoy (10) were in double-figures in the first meeting ...
