GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox College women’s basketball team defeated the Beloit College Buccaneers at Memorial Gym this Saturday, winning by a final score of 65-56. The victory puts their record at 4-9 on the season, as they begin conference play in earnest.
The Prairie Fire got off to a hot start, stifling the Buccaneers shooting while playing efficient offensive basketball of their own. Knox’s Jessica Lee and Saxon Alvarez provided an important spark for the offense, setting up other players with crisp passes and throwing up open jumpers. Lee posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds on the day, while Alvarez shot 3-6 and had a commanding presence on the court. Defensively, the Prairie Fire held Beloit to only 24% shooting from the floor, while grabbing plenty of steals and rebounds, as well. As a result, Knox entered the half up by 11 points.
The second half saw Knox kick it up a gear on both sides of the court. Haylee Carpenter provided accurate perimeter shooting for the Prairie Fire, hitting 4-10 of her shots from downtown. Carpenter paced the bench unit in scoring, as they outclassed the Buccaneers and allowed the starters to catch their breath in peace. Knox’s guards played effective perimeter defense of their own, only allowing a single three-pointer in the half and clogging up potential passing lanes. The Prairie Fire’s lead was never truly in danger, and they coasted to the full-time whistle with ease.
"Proud of our team effort tonight," said head coach Kira Mowen. "They applied pressure for a full 40 minutes and we were able to handle and finish the game. I’m super proud of our bench and the production they brought to the floor tonight. Now as we prepare for the rest of season we will focus on cutting back on fouls and making our own free throws. Overall I’m happy to be back with the program and excited about moving forward."
Knox continues their homestand this Tuesday when they play Illinois College at 7 p.m.
