Galesburg, Illinois —With the results from Midwest Conference (MWC) league play this past weekend, the Prairie Fire women's basketball team has secured the number three seed in the MWC Tournament!
Ripon College is set to host the four team MWC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26. The semifinal games will be played Friday with the tournament final on Saturday.
The Prairie Fire will take on the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College in their semifinal game at 3:30 p.m. (CST). With a win, the Prairie Fire will compete in the championship game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (CST) against the winner of the Ripon College vs. Illinois College semifinal game.
Dating back to the 2017-18 season, this will be the program’s third tournament appearance in four seasons (note: no tournament was held in the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Under first year head coach Kira Mowen, the Prairie Fire have compiled a 10-6 record in MWC and also notched an eight game win streak during the second half of the season, tying the program record for consecutive wins in a season.
The Prairie Fire finished the regular season fourth in the conference in scoring (62.8 points per game) and third in defense (59.5 points allowed per game). Kristin Herndon’s 1.7 blocks per game lead the league and Saxon Alvarez was third in the MWC in assist to turnover ratio (1.2). Catessa Duran was the leading scorer for the Prairie Fire with 11.1 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game (3rd in MWC).
