Knox Women's Basketball Wins Conference Opener

The Prairie Fire women's basketball team defeated Grinnell 75-66 in their Midwest Conference opener on November 29.

The Pioneers took an early 4-0 lead, but Knox quickly adjusted and soon held a 12-6 lead. The Prairie Fire took a 15-9 lead into the second quarter. Grinnell came back to tie the game at 22-22 and take a 28-27 lead at halftime.

The Pioneers led by as many as eight in the third quarter, but Knox stormed back to take a 52-48 lead at the end of the period.

Grinnell tied the game at 56-56 early in the fourth quarter, but the Prairie Fire responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead. The Pioneers cut the deficit to two points with 4:20 left to play. Knox took control from there to earn the victory.

SarinaDacio led Knox with 19 points on 3-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Sophie Elstone added 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 showing from the charity stripe. Kristin Herndon tallied her third straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"We played well down the stretch in this one," said head coach Kira Mowen. "We shot very well in the second half after grinding through the first half. We can't always rely on our shooting to save us, but I'm very proud of the way we fought the whole game to stay in it to give ourselves the chance to pull away at the end."
