Men's Tennis Drops Two Matches on Senior Day

The Monmouth College men's tennis team started Midwest Conference play with a pair of 7-0 losses on Saturday. The Scots fell at home in the morning match to Cornell and lost the afternoon match to perennial champions Grinnell.

Sawyer Day (Cupertino, California) and Matthew Savage (Washington, Illinois) played at #1 doubles and lost to Cornell in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5). Antonio Perez (St. George, Utah) and Macaden Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) lost 7-5 at #2 while Spencer Corn (Kansas City, Missouri) and Andrew Nickols (Janesville, Wisconsin) lost 6-1 at #3.

In singles, Day lost 6-1, 6-4 at #1 while Savage lost 6-1, 6-4 at #2. Perez lost 6-0, 6-0 at #3 and Sepich lost 6-1, 6-2 at #4. Nickols lost 7-5, 6-1 at #5 and Corn fell 6-0, 6-0 at #6.

Against Grinnell, who has won 191 straight MWC matches, the Scots played the same doubles combinations losing 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0. Day lost 6-2, 6-0 at #1 singles and Perez fell 6-1, 6-1 at #3. The others all lost 6-0, 6-0 including freshman Alfonso Mares (Oak Lawn, Illinois) who subbed in at #6 for Nickols as Corn moved up to #5.

Monmouth's three seniors, Corn, Day and Nickols were honored in a ceremony before the Cornell match which was moved indoors due to wet courts.

The Scots return to action next Saturday with road matches at Lawrence and Ripon.
