The Monmouth College men's soccer team fell behind early and couldn't catch up in a 3-2 non-conference loss at Coe on Saturday. The Fighting Scots (2-3-1) have two more non-conference games remaining before jumping into Midwest Conference play on Sept. 28.
The Kohawks got on the board in the eighth minute with a goal against Monmouth goalkeeper Alejandro Zamarripa (El Paso, Texas). They doubled the lead in the 17th minute and made it 3-0 just 30 seconds later. Zamarripa finished the half with two saves. Monmouth got on the board in the 30th minute. Freshman Isai Barajas (El Paso, Texas) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Justin Barrett (Las Vegas, Nevada).
Neither team scored for the next 55 minutes. Monmouth pulled within a goal at 3-2 when Owen Murray (Cedar City, Utah) blasted the ball into the second of the net with 2:02 to play. Murray is tied for the team lead with three goals and Saturday's was unassisted. Neither team scored in the final two minutes as Coe held on for the win.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Treyton Yi (Streamwood, Illinois) played all 90 minutes for the sixth straight game ... Zamarripa, Mathew Hipolito (Plainfield, Illinois) and Tanner Faivre (Earlville, Illinois) also played all 90 minutes ... Zamarripa made three saves ... Coe outshot Monmouth 13-10 and shots on goal were 6-4The teams had split the last two matchups with Coe winning at home 2-0 in 2023 ... The Scots play at Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday with a 7 p.m kickoff ... The next home game is Sept. 25 against Millikin.
