Scots Fall to Grinnell in Season Finale

The Monmouth College women's basketball team (5-20, 2-14) fell 67-52 at home to Grinnell on Saturday in the season finale.

Down 4-0 the Scots tied the game through buckets by Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois). Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) tied the game at 6-6 and 8-8. Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) gave the Scots a lead and Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) answered a Grinnell bucket with a layup. The Pioneers scored at the end of the quarter for a 14-12 lead.

Jones made a free throw for Monmouth's first point of the second quarter but Grinnell went on an extended 13-1 run to lead 23-13. Scheidenhelm scored down low but the Pioneers pushed the lead to 29-15. Rangel ended the run with a bucket and Goodrich made a 3-pointer. The Pioneers hit a pair of 3-pointers for a 36-21 halftime lead.

Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer and Scheidenhelm scored down low as Grinnell built a 19-point lead. Down 23, Goodrich scored in the paint and hit a corner 3-pointer to trim the Pioneers lead to 49-31. After a Pioneers timeout, Jones hit a 3-pointer and Grinnell closed the quarter with free throws to lead 51-34.

Sellers scored the first basket of the fourth quarter and Rangel added a basket in the paint. After the visitors scored, Rangel hit a 3-pointer for a 55-41 game. Jones scored four points in a row and Grinnell called timeout with 4:00 to play. The Pioneers scored four straight before Jones converted and Goodrich both scored with under two minutes to play. Grinnell finished the game with a bucket to win 67-52.

Goodrich led the Scots with 15 points while Jones had 13. Both Goodrich and Madi Finch (Aledo, Illinois) had six rebounds while Jones had five. Rangel led the team with four assists

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Jones has scored in double digits 20 times this season while Goodrich did so 11 times ... Jones led the team on the season in minutes played, points, rebounds, free throws made, free throws attempted and blocks ... She finished the season with 13.9 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game ... Stearns led the team with 54 assists and 47 steals ... Rangel led the team in 3-pointers made with 33 ... Jones, Goodrich and Stearns started all 25 games ... Grinnell swept the season series ... Jones and Scheidenhelm were honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
