The Monmouth College women's basketball team put three players in double digits but fell at home against Illinois College 86-68 on Feb. 5. The Fighting Scots (5-16, 2-10) are back home next week against Knox.
IC scored first but Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) hit a pair of 3-pointers with a bucket in between by Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) as the Scots took an 8-2 lead. The visitors made three free throws before Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) put the Scots up 10-5 with a jumper. Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) made a free throw but IC tied the game at 11. The Lady Blues took the lead with a 3-pointer before Stearns hit a jumper. IC pushed the lead to 20-14 before Goodrich made a free throw to end the quarter.
Scheidenhelm and Goodrich made baskets to start the second quarter as the Scots trimmed the lead to one. IC regained the lead and added another bucket before Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) converted two free throws. The Lady Blues pushed the lead to 30-23 and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) made a layup for her first points of the night. Goodrich scored on a putback and Stearns knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Scots back within six. The Lady Blues closed the half with a 5-2 run to lead 42-33.
The visitors pushed the lead to 12 early in the second half and Jones scored Monmouth's first bucket. Rangel and Stearns hit consecutive 3-pointers before IC scored on two straight possessions. Scheidenhelm scored in the paint. Jones had a putback and Stearns hit a 3-pointer to cut the IC lead to 56-50. Jones and Rangel made two free throws each but IC ran the lead back to double digits at 67-54.
IC started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to lead by 21 before Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) scored on a runner. Goodrich scored and Stearns made a pair of free throws to cut the IC lead to 15. Goodrich scored again but the Scots couldn't slow down Jaylin Patterson who set a new season and career-high with 32 points to put IC back up by 19. Makenzie Yarc (Poplar Grove, Illinois) scored her first collegiate bucket and Ava Borchardt (Harvard, Illinois) scored in the paint before IC hit a 3-pointer to win 86-68.
Goodrich led the Scots with 18 points while Stearns added 16 and Jones had 10. Stearns and Goodrich both had seven rebounds. Stearns led the Scots with four assists while Goodrich and Rangel both grabbed two steals.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Jones has scored in double figures 17 times this season, including eight straight games ...
