Softball Drops Pair in Florida on Monday

The Monmouth College softball team dropped a pair of games to start their Florida trip on Monday. The Fighting Scots (1-7) ;lost the opener 10-0 to Nebraska Wesleyan and 11-7 to Webster University 10-0 in the night cap.

Brooklyn Manners (Burleson, Texas) legged out a single in the first inning and Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) lined a single to left field in the second but neither team was able to score through the first two innings.

Monmouth starter Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) kept UNW off the board until the third. The Prairie Wolves notched three runs with three straight two-out hits in the third.

Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) reached base on a walk but the Scots were unable to answer before heading to the fourth inning. Nebraska Wesleyan added 5 more runs in the top of the fourth.

Powers tallied her second hit of the game on an infield single in the bottom half of the fourth. Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) took over on the mound and finished out the game.The Prairie wolves scored 3 more to take a 10-0 lead in the top of the fifth and the Scots were unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning.

Game 2

The Scots came out of the gate swinging with Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) leading off the game off with a double followed by an infield single from Manners. Powers dropped a single into shallow right field to drive home Wyman. Powers stole second and Manners scored on the throw. Riley King (Aledo, Illinois) doubled and Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) hit a line drive single to center field to drive in Powers. Addie Narlock (Antioch, Illinois) hit a double to drive in Lewis to give the Scots a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) started the game for the Scots. The Gorloks answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. The Scots had a pair of strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the second before the Gorlocks took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a couple doubles and an error.

Powers singled again in the third followed by a double from King. Kayleigh Cobb (Pawnee, Illinois) took over to start the bottom of the third. The Gorloks added another run after a couple walks, a hit by pitch, and an error. McKealey Klokkenga (Delavan, Illinois) came in and finished out the game. The Gorloks scored another pair of runs to take a 10-4 lead into the 4th.

Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) got into the hit column with a single to lead off the fourth followed by a single from Wyman. The Gorloks added one more in the bottom of the fourth off of a single. King doubled and Lewis drove her in with a triple before scoring on a throwing error. Narlock hit her second double of the game and Ashley Juerjens (Delavan, Illinois) drove her in making the score 11-7.

Wyman added her third hit of the game and a stolen base before heading to the bottom of the fifth. King;s fourth hit of the game was an infield single in the top of the sixth. Gerard doubled and Wyman singled in the top of the seventh but the Scots were unable to keep the momentum going, falling 11-7.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Powers had two hits in both games Monday ... King and Wyman each had four hits in the second gameLewis, Narlock and Gerard had two hits in game two ... Powers and Manners had hits in both games ... Monmouth out-hit Webster 18-10 ... Monmouth has eight total games in Florida ... Nebraska Wesleyan leads the all-time series 2-1 ... The Scots last met UNW in 2018, a 2-1 loss in Florida ... Monmouth beat UNW in 2017 in Florida ... Webster is 6-1 all-time against Monmouth and the teams haven't met since the second game of the 2008 season ... The Scots play Emerson College at 2:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday with a game against Fitchburg State at 7 p.m. ET ... The home opener is March 18 against Illinois Wesleyan.
