Stuffed animals get checkups at 3rd Teddy Bear Hospital

Dozens of stuffed animals are now healthier after visiting the Teddy Bear Hospital at Black Hawk College.

The third annual event brought 82 children to the East Campus to get checkups for their favorite stuffed animals and learn about careers in the veterinary industry.

The hospital included stations for weight check, X-rays, bandaging, heart rate, pharmacy and surgery, all performed by 25 students in the BHC Veterinary Technology Program. BHC Student Ambassadors and the BHC Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (SCNAVTA) also helped with the event.

“The students create such a warm and welcoming environment for the children to pass through the six phases of the veterinary clinic,” said Dr. Colleen Lewis, lead veterinarian for the BHC Veterinary Technology Program.

“Wonder and excitement fill the air as our next generation of animal caregivers learn about what it takes to keep an animal happy and healthy,” she said.

The free event was in partnership with the Henry County Humane Society - Kewanee Animal Shelter. Children and their families brought items such as cat litter, canned food, paper towels, bleach and treats to donate to the shelter.

Participants also donated $431, and the Wethersfield High School Key Club donated $100 to help with the shelter’s current vet bill.

Louise Harrison, president of the Kewanee Animal Shelter Board, said the Teddy Bear Hospital is one of her favorite humane society events.

“Watching the children learning about the importance of caring for their pets is endearing and inspirational,” she said.

The BHC Veterinary Technology Program is accepting applications for Fall 2025 and will host an open house Friday, Feb. 21 from 1-4 p.m.
