WIU Wind Ensemble Concert Thursday to Feature Galesburg High School Wind Symphony

The Western Illinois University School of Music will present a Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

The WIU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Professor of Music and Director of Bands Mike Fansler, will perform works by John Barnes Chance, Philip Sparke and Alfred Reed. This concert will also feature Professor Bruce Briney, trumpet, performing in the world premiere of Professor John Mindeman’s composition Miracle Fair, a three-movement work for solo trumpet and wind ensemble. Completed in August 2022, the piece was written for, and dedicated to Briney, Mindeman’s friend and colleague, on the occasion of Briney's 30th anniversary as a professor at the WIU School of Music.

WIU graduate student Brian Drews, of Macomb, will conduct Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance. Also featured on the concert is the Galesburg High School Wind Symphony, under the direction of WIU alumnus Andy Empey. The visiting group will perform various holiday music and will conclude the concert by joining the WIU Wind Ensemble and guests for the final piece Russian (and Ukrainian) Christmas Music, by Alfred Reed.

This performance is open free for general audience seating, and will be live-streamed on the School of Music's YouTube channel and on its Facebook page.
